If you are just starting out then I would recommend budgeting for the Wix US$8.50 or US$12.50 per month and the free Canva and MailChimp accounts should be fine, to begin with.

Agencies charge upwards of $180+ per/hour. Web studios will charge $5,000 + monthly charges for a good standard website package with limited flexibility (basically only text changes e.g. it could cost you $100 just to resize the logo or move an image).


With few overheads and a genuine passion to help, I am driven to keep costs down and make it affordable for small businesses to have the advantages big businesses get. Using world-class online apps like Wix, Canva and MailChimp, ongoing costs are non-existent for design files or a fraction of that of hosting and maintaining a website with a web studio or agency. 


Warning: Avoid common traps when creating your marketing...


The first challenge is doing it yourself without the knowledge of what works and what doesn't. It can take hours, if not days to create your websites, brochures, and other collateral and without a clear understanding of your strategy or how to market yourself effectively or when you use the standard templates, the results could be far from what you would have desired. 


If you do take the plunge and get your website built by a developer/web agency or your brochures/flyers created by a designer or printer, there are some things you must be aware of...


Websites often have limited flexibility. Before you sign up for getting your website built, make sure you are aware of what you can or can't change on site. Most websites have a Content Management System where you'll be able to change the body text (like the headlines and paragraphs) but not button text, colours, layout, images outside of the body content, image size or location, menus, background colours etc. It's great to be able to test what works and what doesn't on your website. For example, there's lots of research out there that shows that just changing your call-to-action button colour can dramatically improve response rate. If you don't have the flexibility to do this yourself then there's usually a minimum charge each time you want to change or test something. 


Design files e.g. flyers, brochures, and business cards, are often provided to you in non-editable formats unless you have expensive software (and know how to use it) like Photoshop and Indesign. You'll need to pay the designer or printer for any future changes. If you have the flexibility of having your files in a user-friendly online application like Canva, you can make changes and download new files to send to Vistaprint or your local printer anytime. Because printing can be super cheap these days (like $10 specials for 250 business cards or 50 flyers) you can test different offers every few months or change events for instance.

What do I need to provide or do through this process?

You (or key people within your organisation) will need to be available for 1-2 strategy meetings and possible further smaller chats about your business objectives, mission, vision, values, target market, to answer questions on the product you sell or the services you provide, outcomes your customers experience, your story and other things that will be useful when creating new content to market your products and services. Some of this can be done in a questionnaire form or via phone/video conference.

Any marketing content or content about your business will also be helpful.

You will need to supply images (specific to your organisation), testimonials, product and service details).

You (or someone in your organisation) will need to be available to answer ongoing questions to ensure content is accurate as it's being written over time.

You will be responsible for arranging domain name or upgrading packages on third-party websites (e.g. Wix). We can give you guidance on this.

With most clients, I find the more we work together and collaborate on the outcome of your project, the more likely you will get the end result you desire.

How long will it take?

Depending on the package you choose and the current work load we're experiencing, you could have your website anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks (for a standard website). We can give you a better estimate when we chat and discuss your requirements.

Why have you chosen Wix as the platform to do all the websites on?

Wix has a wide variety of options available that wouldn't normally be cost-effective if you were building your website with a web studio. I've spent over 15 years working with web developers and agencies creating websites from 1-page sites to large scale projects costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

I've also spent years creating websites for clients, family, and friends. I've tried Wordpress, Weebly, Squarespace amongst others and I kept coming back to Wix. Wix has created the most accessible features for the least cost with good flexibility of design and functionality. Whilst all platforms have their limitations (Wix included), I have found Wix to be the one that outperforms its rivals.
